Sylvie Bonnot | De la combustion du paysage

12 December 2013

For this new exhibition the Hôtel Elysées Mermoz Gallery has collaborated with the agency BG Now, which introduced us to the work of the artist Sylvie Bonnot. Named “De la combustion du paysage” (landscape’s combustion), it will present some of her recent production showing the surprising variety of her work.

Sylvie Bonnot goes out for long travels in wild and rough landscapes such as Siberia, Spitzberg or Ireland and brings back photographs. Back in her studio in Burgundy,  France, she uses theses photos as a material that she then carves, folds, peels in order to bring the lanscapes up to combustion.

We have the pleasure to invite you to the opening of the exhibition on the 22nd of May from 7 to 9 pm at the Hôtel Elysées Mermoz.

“Michel Duport” by Michel Duport
from 17/12/2013 to 02/03/2014

« Toward the end of the 80s, the painted picture got « blown up » so to speak, it became a volume beyond the traditional rectangle, it took on the status of an object (ultimately decorative and useless…). But has not painting always had a decorative « function » ? Is not the painter’s rôle to put one color next to another (suite : the minimum of the painter) ? Is that the object of painting ?
The picture/volume often adopts the form of a shelf on which other forms, whether colored or not, find their place. The possible moves of « picture/volumes » parody the painter’s hesitation when building up the picture.
The forms imply decisions (cuts, slippages, overlaps) and drawings. These also take the direction of the object… Poured into aluminum or bronze casts, the drawings materialize beyond the tracings that were their birth.

Souami-2from 10/01/2013 to 24/02/2013

Saadi Souami paintings are at odds with many abstract images produced by a showy generation of artists who are revisiting the abstract experience by pulling the sign or the pop image with the colours of the flashy world of communication. On the contrary he asserts interiority, a density of the colour which absorbs as if its soft geometry was setting with a discreet grace a place to experiment the potentials of colours, when the line gives a rhythm that rises gradually in the field the painter lays out. As a private garden where colour arises by successive lines for crimping a quite evanescent monochrome in its control, but strengthened by the coloured limits that irrigate it. An art of colour that gives to eyes an appearance of meditation. Chromatic thoughts in their humility have for ambition to tear from the compulsive vision ravaging the eyes, to force to settle down.

Soizic Stokvis | Open Data

25 October 2012

_1PC8553_DxOcfrom 25/10/2012 to 05/01/2013

I am particularly interested by the phenomenon of the megalopolises. Indeed their topographies, like « open data », are evolving continually. The « planetary village » seems to be emerging, based on new balances which appear however to be fragile.
As a painter, a part of my work consists in abstract monumental interventions
which I carry out by painting directly on the walls and to which I add now and then tape extensions.
During their realization I specially pay attention to the perception I have of the places. Becoming the support of my geometric paintings, the premises consequently turn out different. One experiences another understanding of the space. An architectural transformation consequently takes place, in the same way as cities undergo significant changes.

At the Hotel Elysées-Mermoz, I will create a mural installation, consisting in a central printed drawing on canvas and its extensions. It refers to a no longer circumscribed world and which is somehow overflowing.
In addition, pieces made on Plexiglas, a typical urban synthetic material, will be located in the hall. My graphic vocabulary remains abstract. The patterns I create are realized by computer, because of the specificity of the process . The universes which are created by this means are entering in dialogue with each other, similar and yet different, as cities are. The round form of the material is a hint to nowadays statistics. The « open data » are leading to new approaches.
